French media groups to hold emergency meeting after Isis cyber-attack | World news | The Guardian

French media groups to hold emergency meeting after Isis cyber-attack | World news | The Guardian.

Yves Bigot, the director-general of French TV network TV5Monde, says the company’s firewalls were breached by people with a deep knowledge of security and possible links to Islamic State

France’s culture minister is to call an urgent meeting of French media groups to assess their vulnerability to hacking after the public service television network TV5Monde was taken over by individuals claiming to belong to Islamic State, blacking out broadcasts as well as hacking its websites and Facebook page.

All TV5Monde broadcasts were brought down in a blackout between 10pm and 1am local time on Wednesday to Thursday by hackers claiming allegiance to Isis. They were able to seize control of the television network founded by the French government in 1984, simultaneously hacking 11 channels as well as its website and social media accounts.

Experts say the cyber-attack represented a new level of sophistication for the Islamist group, which has claimed complex hacking before, but nothing as big as this. The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened a terrorism investigation into the attack.

Compulsive Internet use has been categorized as a mental health issue in many countries, including the United States, but China was among the first to label “Internet addiction” a clinical disorder.

In this Op-Doc video, we show the inner workings of a rehabilitation center where Chinese teenagers are “deprogrammed.” The Internet Addiction Treatment Center, in Daxing, a suburb of Beijing, was established in 2004. It was one of the first of its kind – and there are now hundreds of treatment programs throughout China andSouth Korea. Video: Merry Christmas From Edward Snowden: DCist

Video: Merry Christmas From Edward Snowden: DCist.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden recently opened up to journalist Barton Gellman in an illuminating profile published Monday by the Washington Post. In it, he told The Post that he is “not trying to bring down the NSA,” but rather, “working to improve the NSA,” and had a nice message for them: “I am still working for the NSA right now. They are the only ones who don’t realize it.”

It seems like Snowden isn’t too keen on keeping quiet this holiday season, as yesterday he had a nice, Orwellian Christmas message for everyone: The government is spying on you.

In a video for the U.K. station, Channel 4—known for its annual “Alternative Christmas Message”—Snowden warned of the dangers of government surveillance, saying that “a child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They’ll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalyzed thought. And that’s a problem, because privacy matters.”

Video: Edward Snowden wins Sam Adams award

Video: Edward Snowden wins Sam Adams award.

Friday, 11 October 2013, 22:30 UTC

This week Edward Snowden received the Integrity Award from the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence. These videos from the award ceremony are the first of Mr Snowden after being granted asylum in Russia.

The videos show Mr Snowden as he was given the award by Ray McGovern (ex-CIA) who said “Sam Adams Associates are proud to honor Mr. Snowden’s decision to heed his conscience and give priority to the Common Good over concerns about his own personal future. We are confident that others with similar moral fiber will follow his example in illuminating dark corners and exposing crimes that put our civil rights as free citizens in jeopardy…. Just as Private Manning and Julian Assange exposed criminality with documentary evidence, Mr. Snowden’s beacon of light has pierced a thick cloud of deception. And, again like them, he has been denied some of the freedoms that whistleblowers have every right to enjoy.”

Also present at the ceremony was WikiLeaks journalist Sarah Harrison who took Mr Snowden from Hong Kong to Moscow and obtained his asylum. The previous award winners, all United States Government whistleblowers, Thomas Drake (NSA), Jesselyn Raddack (DoJ) and Coleen Rowley (FBI), were also in attendance. These videos were filmed on the October 9 and are released for the first time today.
